Hello, Daylily Friends!!
Can you believe that it's already time to fertilize your daylilies? You know that there's two times a year to fertilize; at what I call "candy times." Those two dates are Valentine's Day and Halloween. And Valentine's Day is just around the corner!
I like to use a mild, balanced 8-8-8 fertilizer. It is granular in form, and all you need to do is sprinkle a little bit at the base of each daylily plant. No need to water it in; the rain and the dew will dissolve it accordingly. Another balanced fertilizer is 10-10-10, but no higher. Other folks like to use formulas like Miracle Gro, and that's fine too.
Due to the cold, cold winter we've had, even the evergreen types of daylilies are looking sparse and mushy, much like a head of lettuce that got too cold in the back of the fridge. No worries; the daylilies will spring back to life in no time. I just love these plants; they are so easy to deal with.
Looking forward to a wonderful daylily season this year! I will be watching the calendar to let you know the exact opening date, whether I'll be opening the 1st or 2nd weekend of May. It just depends on the flowers, of course. Can't wait! To God be the glory!!
